About

The content: Mostly I write about observations and happenings from my life, sometimes with more personal reflections or pieces of research mixed in. My intentions for writing are to share my experiences, to try to make sense of what it means to be living in a foreign culture, and simply to spend a little bit more time writing. I’ve taken all of the pictures I include unless otherwise noted (don’t expect anything too nice – mostly I just use my iPhone 4 camera).

The author: I’m a 20-something recent college graduate from the northeast USA, now living in Tainan, Taiwan. In general, I like to spend my time doing things like eating, climbing on stuff, running around, biking, collecting rocks and drinking tea.

The header picture: Blossoms and petals fallen from a flamboyant tree (Delonix regia) on the ground. Flamboyant trees  are part of the legume family, and as such fix nitrogen in the soil and have fern-like leaves. They were originally endemic to Madagascar, but now grow all across the world in most places where the climate is tropical or semi-tropical. Due to their bright, distinctive blossoms, many people identify places that they grow with their image. The flamboyant tree is the official tree of Tainan. I took this picture in Puerto Rico several years ago.

The nameHamroni is a nickname that came from my friend. I like it because it’s a play on how I often misspell my own name, and because it sounds similar to “ham” and “pepperoni”, thus capturing the fact I am often thinking about food – although to be honest, I’m not a big fan of either ham or pepperoni…
